Deccan Chargers – Road to the IPL Championship 2009

Deccan Chargers led by Adam Gilchrist, lifted the second IPL trophy 2009 which was initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2008.

The tournament was organised in South Africa as the Government of India was unable to provide the required security in the event because of the general elections in the country. Eight teams took part in the tournament which was played on a double robin league and knock out stages as 59 matches were played altogether. The first match was played at Newlands, Cape Town on April 18, 2009 and the final took place at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on May 24.

We will highlight the performance of Deccan Chargers in the entire Indian Premier League 2009 which led them to the victory stands.

1st match vs. Kolkata Knight Riders

The match was played at Newlands, Cape Town on April 19, 2009.

Scores

Kolkata Knight Riders – 101 all out in 19.4 overs, Brad Hodge 31, Aakash Chopra 11, RP Singh 4-22.

Deccan Chargers – 104 for 2 wickets, Herschelle Gibbs 43*, Rohit Sharma 36*, Ashok Dinda 1-24.

Result – Deccan Chargers won the match by 8 wickets.

2nd match vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore

The match took place at Newlands, Cape Town on April 22, 2009.

Deccan Chargers – 184 for 6 wickets in 20 overs, Adam Gilchrist 71, Rohit Sharma 52, Kevin Pietersen 2-31.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 160 for 8 wickets, Virat Kohli 50, Rahul Dravid 48, Scott Styris 3-32.

Result – Deccan Chargers won the match by 24 runs.

3rd match vs. Mumbai Indians

The match was held at Kingsmead, Durban on April 25, 2009.

Deccan Chargers – 168 for 9 wickets in 20 overs, Gibbs 58, Gilchrist 35, Lasith Malinga 3-19.

Mumbai Indians – 156 for 7 wickets, Jean-Paul-Duminy 47, Sachin Tendulkar 36, Pragyan Ojha 3-21.

Result – Deccan Chargers won the match by 12 runs.

4th match vs. Chennai Super Kings

The match was played at Kingsmead, Durban on April 27, 2009.

Chennai Super Kings – 165 for 6 wickets, Matthew Hayden 49, Jacob Oram 41*, Ojha 2-11.

Deccan Chargers – 169 for 4 wickets in 19.3 overs, Gibbs 69*, Gilchrist 44, Raina 2-18.

Result – Deccan Chargers won the match by 6 wickets.

5th match vs. Delhi Daredevils

The match was held at Supersport Park, Centurion on April 30, 2009.

6th match vs. Rajasthan Royals

The match was staged at St. George’s Park, Port Elizabeth on May 2, 2009.

7th match vs. Chennai Super Kings

The match took place at Buffalo Park, East London on May 4, 2009.

Deccan Chargers – 100 all out in 14.4 overs, Dwayne Smith 49, Sharma 21, Shadab Jakati 4-22.

8th match vs. Mumbai Indians

The match was played at Supersport Park, Centurion on May 6, 2009.

9th match vs. Kings XI Punjab

The match took place at De Beers Diamond Park, Kimberley on May 9, 2009.

11th match vs. Delhi Daredevils

The match took place at Kingsmead, Durban on May 13, 2009.

12th match vs. Kolkata Knight Riders

The match was played at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on May 16, 2009.

The match was played at Supersports Park, Centurion on May 21, 2009.

1st semi-final vs. Delhi Daredevils

The first semi final was played on May 22, 2009 at Supersports Park, Centurion.

Result – Deccan Chargers won the semi final by 6 wickets and qualified for the final.

Final vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore

The final of the Indian Premier League 2009 was played at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on May 24, 2009.

Deccan Chargers – 143 for 6 wickets, Herschelle Gibbs 53, Andrew Symonds 33, Rohit Sharma 24, Anil Kumble 4-16 and Vinay Kumar 2-30.

Royal Challengers Bangalore – 137 for 9 wickets, RE van der Merwe 32, Ross Taylor 27, Robin Uthappa 17*, Pragyan Ojha 3-28 and Andrew Symonds 2-18.

Player of the match – Anil Kumble (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Result – Deccan Chargers won the final by 6 runs and clinched IPL2009 title.

Adam Gilchrist was unanimously declared ‘Player of the series’ for his excellent captaincy and all round performance. He smashed 495 runs at an average of 30.93, the best of 85 with three fifties and  held 10 catches behind the stumps with 8 stumping.
