Pakistan 3-263 (Khurram Manzoor 131*, Shan Masood 75, Misbah-ul-Haq 44, Morne Morkel 1-23) leads South Africa 249 (Hashim Amla 118, Jean-Paul Duminy 57, Mohammad Irfan 3-44) by 14 runs

Khurram Manzoor plundered his maiden Test ton, the debutant Shan Masood dispatched fifty and shared a valuable opening partnership as Pakistan ruled the day.

The Proteas were dismissed for 249 in 93.1 overs in their first innings and the hosts piled up 263 for the loss of three mere wickets after utilising 84 overs.

The second day of the first Test came to an end on Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi.

Earlier, the visitors resumed their first innings at 8-245 in 90 overs whereas Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn were at the crease for 118 and 13. Amla was gone without adding any run to his overnight score in the very first over and Steyn followed him for 15 and the entire team was sent back to the pavilion at 249 in 93.1 overs.

Mohammad Irfan and Zulfiqar Babar were the supreme bowlers with three wickets each, Saeed Ajmal held two whereas Junaid Khan got one.

Pakistan went into bat with their new opening pair of Khurram Manzoor along with the debutant Shan Masood. The batsmen started off reasonably well by scoring 53 runs in 15 overs with 3 fours from Shan Masood and one boundary from the first. They kept on cruising nicely and were sending the ball out of fence regularly. Khurram Manzoor hit two back to back fours in the 22nd over and the home side reached 77 without losing any wicket at lunch. Shan Masood attained his first Test fifty in the 32nd over as the score board displayed 100 runs after the next one. The century partnership was achieved by the openers of Pakistan after a lapse of 20 Tests and that was encouraging for them.

Khurram Manzoor reached his third consecutive Test half century in the 34th over and Shan Masood was dropped at 68 by Robin Petersen off Duminy. The healthy first wicket partnership of 135 was dislodged in 43.6 overs when Shan Masood was declared leg before wicket off Duminy for 75 from 244 balls with 8 fours. Khurram Manzoor was stranded at his end while a couple of wickets fell down at the other side. The middle order batsmen, Azhar Ali and Younis Khan, left the scene cheaply for 11 and 1 runs as the hosts were in a bit of strangle at 3-178 in 60.4 overs.

The captain of Pakistan, Misbah-ul-Haq, got together with Khurram Manzoor who hit another two fours in the 66th over. The first survived a review at nine runs and Khurram Manzoor marshalled to his first test hundred on the first ball of the 68th one. Misbah-ul-Haq was reading the ball at ease, hit a few boundaries and remained unbeaten for 44 off 77 with 4 fours. Khurram Manzoor was at his best at 131 from 244 deliveries comprising 14 fours as Pakistan amassed 3-263 in 84 overs.

Vernon Philander, Morne Morkel and Jean-Paul Duminy were the only successful bowlers with one wicket each.

Pakistan has already taken a first innings lead of 14 runs with seven wicket still in hand. They will anticipate extending their supremacy to 150-175 runs which can put them on the driving seat vs. South Africa.
