India (Virat Kohli 86, Rohit Sharma 72, Jason Holder 2-48) beat West Indies 211 (Darren Bravo 59, Johnson Charles 42, Suresh Raina 3-34, Ravindra Jadeja 3-37)
The world no.1, India, continued with their superb team work in the opening ODI against West Indies while outplaying the rivals in all departments of the game.
The Caribbeans were dismissed for 211 runs with seven balls to spare and the Blue Shirts piled up 212 after losing just four wickets in 35.2 overs.
Virat Kohli (India) was declared ‘Player of the match’ for his brilliant knock of 86 runs.
The first one Day International of the three match series was played on Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Nehru Stadium, Kochi.
Earlier, Dwayne Bravo, won the toss for the visitors, decided to bat first and lost the first wicket without a run on board. Johnson Charles along with Marlon Samuels started the repair work with continuous boundaries. They took the score to 65 when the first was caught and bowled by Ravindra Jadeja for 42 and his partner followed 12 runs later for 24. Darren Bravo and Lendl Simmons carried on their hard work and extended the partnership to 142 before the latter departed for 29. Darren Bravo attained his 13th ODI fifty and surrendered against Mohammed Shami for 59. Dwayne Bravo scored 24 as the entire West Indies team was bowled out for 211 in 48.5 overs.
Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja were the most successful bowlers with three wickets each, Ravichandran Ashwin got two and Mohammed Shami chipped in with one wicket.
The Blue Shirts went down by one wicket at 17 when the batsmen in form, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli got together. They made things easy with their masterly batting and went past the hundred runs mark in the 16th over. Sharma powered his 20th ODI half century on the 53rd ball whereas Kohli reached his 27th fifty in the 24th over. The partnership was dislodged at 150 as the first was gone for 72 off 81 balls with 1 six and 8 fours.
Virat Kohli created a world record (along with Vivian Richards) by plundering the fastest 5000 runs in 114th ODI with a grand six but lost his wicket for 86 off just 84 with 2 sixes and 9 fours. The Men in Blue achieved the target by hammering 4-212 with 88 balls still available.
Jason Holder was the top wicket taker with two whereas Ravi Rampaul and Sunil Narine shared one wicket each.
India grabbed the first ODI by a big margin of six wickets and leads the three match series 1-0.
