Bangladesh will be fighting for their survival in the Asia Cup 2012 and the victory in the upcoming encounter against the Blue Shirts will be important for them.

The Bengal Tigers lost the inaugural absorbing match by just 21 runs against Pakistan on March 11, 2012, at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.  The Pakistani openers enabled them with a solid start of 135 runs and they were going good even after losing three wickets at 169 in 34.4 overs. Their middle- late order batting collapsed as the rival bowlers dominated and the Green Shirts managed 262 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs.

Bangladesh openers, Tamim Iqbal and Nazimuddin were in an aggressive mood as they started off well while keeping in view the target. The first wicket was lost at 45, second at 90 and they were reeling at 135 after losing their five top order batsmen in 28.4 overs. It was left with the two bright all rounders of the modern day cricket, Shakib Al Hasan and Nasir Hossain to steady the ship.

The young duo took the challenge and initiated the consolidation process by tackling the dangerous bowling at merit. The score board was kept moving as they accumulated 36 in the power play period which lasted from 36th to 40th over and 200 runs of the innings were achieved in the next over.

The home team required just 47 runs from 42 balls with five wickets in hand as Nasir dispatched two consecutive boundaries in the 44th over off Umar Gul. Bangladesh faced a shock when he was declared leg before wicket on the third ball and Gul took the revenge. Nasir was gone after scoring 47 off 49 balls with the assistance of one six and 3 fours not before sharing a useful partnership of 89 runs for the sixth wicket. That was the turning point of the game as the Green Shirts ripped through their batting and secured 21 runs triumph.

Nasir Hossain blamed himself for the debacle of Bangladesh and acknowledged his poor shot selection at the crucial moment by describing,

“I was the set batsman, so my dismissal was the turning point in the match. I shouldn’t have got out at that stage of the match but I think I played a bit causally. It would have been better if I was tight in my approach at that stage.”

Sachin Tendulkar will be anticipating his 100th hundred against a rather weak side, Bangladesh but Nasir revealed that it was a matter of just one good ball to send the little master back to the pavilion. He said,

“A good ball is a good ball for everyone irrespective of whether Tendulkar is playing it or not.”

Bangladesh have failed time and again while finishing the game and lost quite a few matches which they should have won. Nasir believed if Bengal Tigers block India around 260 to 265 runs they can win the match at the favourable home ground. He anticipated,

“We are confident about the next game against India and we are looking forward to do something good. It would be good game if we can restrict India within 260 to 265 runs on this wicket and I’m confident that’s possible for us.”
