Kolkata Knight Riders 165-8 (Gautam Gambhir 64, Manvinder Bisla 46, Vinay Kumar 2-18) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 123-9 (Vinay Kumar 25, Daniel Vettori 20, Lakshmipathy Balaji 4-18) by 42 runs.
Kolkata Knight Riders were excited to win their first game of the IPL 2012 vs. Royal Challengers Bangalore, a victory that was earned in third match of the tournament.
Lakshmipathy Balaji was declared ‘Player of the match’ for his lethal bowling spell of 4-18 in the allotted 4 overs.
Kolkata Knight Riders smashed 165 runs with two wickets still in hand at the end of the scheduled 20 overs. Royal Challengers Bangalore managed 123 runs for the loss of 9 wickets and demonstrated a dismal performance in front of their home crowd.
The 10th match of the Indian Premier League 2012 was played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, on April 10, 2012. The owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, film star Shah Rukh Khan was among the supporters to back up his team during the match.
Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s captain, Daniel Vettori, won the toss and opted to field on a placid strip. Kolkata Knight Riders opened the innings with Jacques Kallis and their captain Gautam Gambhir. They started off well as Kallis dispatched three fours in the first three overs and Gambhir was assisting him well at the other end. Gambhir opened his arms in the fourth over by gathering 15 runs in the fourth over with one six and two fours and carried on the attack in the next over with two fours.
The initial fifty of the innings was completed on the first ball of the sixth over when Kallis sent the ball flying over the backward square leg boundary for a six. They shared 60 runs for the first wicket in 6.2 overs when Kallis was gone for 22 runs as Manvinder Bisla replaced him and started off with a six and one four in the eighth over. The boundaries were flowing from the willow of Bisla and Gambhir achieved his fifty on the last ball of the 13th over with a four.
The duo added 65 quick fired runs in 7.1 overs when Bisla was stumped by the wicketkeeper AB de Villiers off Muttiah Muralitharan for 46 off 29 balls with 3 sixes and 2 fours. Gambhir was the fourth batsman who went back to the pavilion for 64 off 39 balls with one six and 9 fours as his team plundered 165 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs.
Zaheer Khan, Vinay Kumar and Muralitharan were the top wicket takers with two wickets each as Harshal Patel and Daniel Vettori claimed one wicket each.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore had a horrible start when they lost their four top order batsmen for mere 25 runs in 7.2 overs. They included Cheteshwar Pujara, Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and de Villiers and were reeling at 33-5 after 9.1 overs.
Saurabh Tiwary and the skipper Vettori, consolidated the innings as the first got two fours in the 10th over off Balaji and Tiwary got a life when he was dropped by Shakib al Hasan on the last ball of the same over for 8. Vettori gathered one six and a four in the next over but was bowled by Balaji for 20 off 12 deliveries with one six and 3 fours. Tiwary was the next batsman to be dismissed for 18 as Vinay Kumar secured the one end as the wickets were at the slide with regular intervals from the other.
Vinay Kumar became the ninth victim for 25 on the last ball of the 20th over as they managed 123 runs at the closure of their required quota of overs.
Lakshmipathy Balaji destroyed the batting of the Royal Challengers Bangalore with four wickets, Jacques Kallis and Shakib held two wickets and Ryan ten Doeschate held one wicket.
Kolkata Knight Riders opened their accounts by grasping two points from the match and the Royal Challengers Bangalore lost their first game of the tournament.
