The ever promising Rohit Sharma was ready to face the challenge of the Australian fast and furious bowling by getting a Test Cap in Sydney. He is knocking the doors of the longer version of the game but was unlucky to miss the chance one way or the other.
India is still looking for a solid batsman who can fill the important position of No. 6. He is supposed to be a backbone for every team and assists building a formidable total and act as a shield normally when the second new ball is due as well. Australia enjoys the services of Michael Hussey, England is relying on young Eoin Morgan, South Africa has Ashwell Prince, the youngsters Dean Brownlie and Asad Shafiq are doing well for New Zealand and Pakistan respectively.
India has given chance to Vitrat Kohli in five Tests who played nine innings and managed 202 runs at an average of 22.44, the best of 63 runs with two fifties. He made his debut against West Indies on June 20, 2011, at Jamaica, and scored 4 and 15 runs in the match. The right hand batsman has scored 30, 27, 0, 15 and four runs in his last five innings against West Indies. He posted just 11 runs on board in two innings of the first Test against Australia at Melbourne where India suffered a defeat by 122 runs.
The Indian selectors were not satisfied with the performance of Virat Kohli and there is a possibility that Rohit Sharma will be awarded with the Test cap at Sydney. That might be disclosed on December 2nd when the final decision will be made. Rohit commented about his chances by saying, “Maybe tomorrow we will have a better idea as to what the wicket will be like. Probably by tomorrow I will be told whether I am playing or not.”
Rohit Sharma has been a prolific performer in the shorter versions of the game and has played quite a few match winning innings for his country. He made his debut in One Day International on June 23, 2007, against Ireland at Belfast. The 24-year-old has played 72 ODIs, scored 1810 runs at a high average of 34.80, the best of 114 runs with two centuries and 11 fifties. He took part in 22 Twenty20s, scored 415 runs averaging 31.92, the best of unbeaten 79 runs assisted with four fifties.
Rohit Sharma has scored 72, unbeaten 90, 95, 27 and 21 runs in his last five innings and has shown the signs of maturity since long. He plays the express bowling with authority and has proved that against West Indies recently. He was ready to face the challenge by the Australia quickies and said,
“Of course [I’m ready],” he said. “I don’t want to be unprepared. My preparation has to be 100%. It doesn’t matter if I am playing or not. Preparation has to always be the same. I have to be ready [to play] each and every time. Because you never know, somebody might get injured on the day of the Test. You have to be ready.”
