West Indies 307 (Darren Sammy 73, Denesh Ramdin 62, Marlon Samuels 51, Kyle Jarvis 5-54) and 1-12 beat Zimbabwe 211 and 107 (Craig Ervine 23*, Vusi Sibanda 15, Shane Shillingford 6-49) by nine wickets.
Shane Shillingford penetrated through the perishable batting line up of Zimbabwe and achieved his career’s best performance as the Caribbeans clinched the Test.
Zimbabwe managed 211 and 107 runs respectively in both their innings as West Indies piled up 307 in the first followed by 12 runs for the loss of one wicket in the second.
Shane Shillingford (West Indies) was declared ‘Player of the match’ for his deadly bowling spell in the match. He took three wickets in the first innings of Zimbabwe followed by 6-49 in the second.
The first Test of the two match series came to an end on Thursday, March 14, 2013 that was the third day of the game.
Earlier, the tourists started their second innings in a dismal position at 41 for the loss of three wickets in 14 overs whereas Ray Prince and Brendan Taylor were at the crease at 7 and 0 runs respectively. Taylor got six runs in the first two balls with a four but lost his wicket to Shillingford on the last ball of the first over for 6. Price was clean bowled by Kemar Roach in the next over without any run in his overnight score.
The newcomer Craig Ervine was dropped at four runs on the second delivery of the 19th over and Zimbabwe was reeling at 6-58 in 22.3 overs. Regis Chakabva joined in next with Ervine, they tried to stop the invasion of the West Indian bowlers and the latter hit his first boundary on the 35th ball he faced. Ervine added 2 more fours in the 30th over as Chakabva became the next victim at 77 for just 6 runs off 27 balls. Graeme Cremer and Ervine added 20 runs for the 8th wicket as the first was caught behind by Denesh Ramdin off Shillingford for 14. Craig Ervine secured his end with 23 off 69 with 3 fours as the innings of the entire Zimbabwe team was rolled back for 107 in 41.4 overs.
Shane Shillingford delivered his best performance in an innings in the longer version of the game by grasping six wickets, Shannon Gabriel held three whereas Kemar Roach claimed one wicket.
The Windies required 12 mere runs to win the match but lost their first wicket when Kieran Powell once again went out cheaply for six runs. The target was achieved on the last ball of the fifth over when Chris Gayle got two runs.
West Indies won the first Test by a vast margin of nine wickets and lead the two match series 1-0. The second and final match will commence from March 20, 2013, at Windsor Park, Roseau, Dominica.
