Shikhar Dhawan was honoured with a golden bat whereas Ravindra Jadeja got the golden ball as team India won the coveted 2013 ICC Champions Trophy at Edgbaston.
The Men in Blue fired from all corners to let their rival teams down in all departments of the game under the inspired leadership of their legendary captain, MS Dhoni. Their batsmen proved to be the best during the entire tournament and the bowlers bowled excellently whereas the acrobatic fielding supported them in each and every match.
India won their pool matches with a reasonable margin against strong units such as South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan. They won the semi final vs. Sri Lanka by a huge margin of eight wickets on June 20, 2013, at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The final was played on June 23, 2013, at Edgbaston, Birmingham, and the Men in Blue defeated the hosts England by five runs in an interesting battle.
Shikhar Dhawan and Ravindra Jadeja were the super stars of the ICC Champions Trophy and the rival teams were stunned by the performance of the two young guns of India. Below, we will highlight the performance of the two players in the event.
Shikhar Dhawan
Dhawan was the supreme batsman in the tournament since he piled up 363 runs at a cracking average of 90.75, the best of 114 comprising 2 hundreds and 1 fifty. The break-up of his five innings is as follows:
1- Vs. South Africa – 114 runs (94b 12×4 1×6), ‘Player of the match’.
2- Vs. West Indies – 102* (107b 10×4 1×6).
3- Vs. Pakistan – 48 (41b 5×4)
4- Vs. Sri Lanka – (semi-final) 68 (92b 6×4 1×6)
5- Vs. England – (final) 31 (24b 2×4 1×6)
Shikhar Dhawan was declared ‘Player of the series’ for his majestic batting and won the golden bat in the post-match ceremony of the event. The 27-year-old was pleased with his performance and commented,
“I’d dreamt of this, I’m really happy with it. The bouncy tracks suit my game. I worked hard in practice and in the warm-up games. It makes it more special because I was out of the side for a few years.”
Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindrasinh Anirudhsinh Jadeja demonstrated his all-round skills in all five matches which India played. His performance in the event is being described below:
1- Vs. South Africa – batting, 47* (29b 7×4 1×6), bowling, 2-31 in 9 overs.
2- Vs. West Indies – bowling, 5-36 in 10 overs, did not bat, ‘Player of the match’.
3- Vs. Pakistan – bowling, 2-30 in 8 overs, did not bat.
4- Vs. Sri Lanka – (semi-final) bowling, 1-33 in 10 overs, did not bat.
5- Vs. England – (final) batting, 33* (25b 2×4 2×6), bowling 2-24 in 4 overs, ‘Player of the match’.
Ravindra Jadeja was certainly among the best all-rounders of the tournament and expressed his feelings after getting the golden ball by saying,
“I did well throughout the tournament and I was very positive. It was quite difficult to rotate the strike, so myself and Virat just tried to build a good partnership. I was enjoying the bowling on this wicket. The skipper always backs me when I bowl.”
