The Black Caps were sent reeling at 150 runs when their first innings was folded back in 45.5 overs. The Kangaroos scored 12 runs in their first innings for the loss of one wicket in 4.2 overs at stumps on the first day of the match.

The second and final Test was commenced on December 9, 2011, at Bellerive Oval, Hobart.

The Kiwi’s faced a humiliating defeat by nine wickets on December 4, 2011, at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane. The 21-year-old fast bowler, Pattinson was the wrecker in chief in the second innings when he ripped through their batting by claiming five wickets of the visitors for just 27 runs.

Earlier Australian Captain, Michael Clarke won the toss and opted to bat keeping in view the timid batting of visitors against Pattinson in the previous match. The decision proved its worth when the first wicket was taken by them at just 10 runs when Martin Guptill was gone at just three runs caught behind by Brad Haddin off Peter Siddle.

Jesse Ryder came in next but was in hot soup immediately, there was a huge appeal for lbw off Pattinson on the last ball of the third over. The appeal was turned down by the field umpire which was referred for review and Ryder had to leave the field.

The top order batsmen could not negotiate the hostile quick bowling of Australia and the wickets kept on falling like nine pins. The Black Caps were in trouble and lost their six supreme batsmen for mere 60 runs in 19.5 overs.

Dean Brownlie stood firm at one end and educated the top order of New Zealand how to tackle the dangerous bowling. He shared two vital partnerships with the late order batsmen to get past hundred runs.

Brownlie shared 45 runs association with Doug Bracewell who was gone after scoring 12 runs. Tim Southee was another batsman who had the courage to face 32 balls for his 18 runs while sharing 41 runs partnership.

Browlie achieved his hard earned fifty on the third ball of the 44th over but went back to the pavilion after adding just six more runs to his individual score bowled by Pattinson. The whole team was bowled out at 150 runs and once again came under lot of pressure.

Pattinson was the highest wicket taker by clinching five wickets, siddle claimed three and Mitchell Starc chipped in with two wickets.

Australia did not have a positive start as well since they lost their first wicket at seven runs when Phillip Hughes was caught in the second slip off Chris Martin on four runs.

They have reached at 12 runs at the close of the first day’s play, David Warner and Usman Khawaja were unbeaten on seven and one run.

The match is still wide open and the play before lunch will set the direction of the match.
