Ireland enjoys supremacy over United Arab Emirates

Ireland 3-103 (Ed Joyce 43, William Porterfield 33*, Sharif Asadullah 2-21) beat United Arab Emirates 6-123 (Shaiman Anwar 30, Amjad Ali 20, Paul Stirling 2-12, Kevin O’Brien 2-17) by 21 runs (Duckworth/Lewis method)

Ed Joyce played a steady innings which enabled Ireland to grasp the game against the United Arab Emirates whereas the match was restricted due to rain.

The United Arab Emirates scored 123 after losing six wickets in 20 overs and the Irish team thrashed 3-103 when the play finished because of rain but they had already surpassed the required target of 83 in 14.2 overs.

Ed Joyce (Ireland) was announced ‘Player of the match’ for his thoughtful knock of 43 from 38 balls.

The ICC World T20 – 8th match, First Round, Group B, was played on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Sylhet Stadium.

Earlier, William Porterfield won the toss for Ireland and invited U.A.E to bat first. Faizan Asif and Amjad Ali started off reasonably well by scoring 35 runs in 4.6 overs when first ran himself out for 11. Amjad Ali followed him 11 runs later for 20 and the next batsman was unable to open his account. Shaiman Anwar and his skipper, Khurram Khan, put their heads down for consolidation. The batsmen kept on creeping and the score was taken to 88 after 13.6 overs when Shaiman Anwar was caught and bowled by Kevin O’Brien for 30 and Khurram Khan departed after contributing 16. Amjad Javed and Rohan Mustafa scored 19 and 13 while their team managed 6-123 in 20 overs.

Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien were the main wicket takers with two each whereas Tim Murtagh claimed one.

Ireland faced the first casualty when Paul Stirling was retired hurt at 15 for 8 as Ed Joyce joined in with William Porterfield. The duo went after the rival bowling and continued piling up the runs with frequent boundaries. The score was enhanced to 95 in 12.3 overs when Joyce was gone for 43 off 38 deliveries with 1 six and 4 fours. Porterfield was doing fine at his end while the next two batsmen surrendered their wickets cheaply. He secured his end for 33 when it started raining and finally the play was called off as the Irish squad powered 3-103 in 14.2 overs whereas they needed 83 until then as per D/L method.

Sharif Asadullah was the top wicket taker with two and Amjad Javed was the other successful bowler with one scalp.

Ireland was declared winner by a margin of 21 runs and they rule the Group B table with four points from two matches.
