Kolkata Knight Riders deflated Rajasthan Royals

Kolkata Knight Riders 2-133 (Yusuf Pathan 49*, Jacques Kallis 33*, Shane Watson 1-21) beat Rajasthan Royals 6-132 (Sanju Samson 40, Shane Watson 35, Sachithra Senanayake 2-26) by eight wickets.

The strong looking batting line up of Rajasthan Royals surrendered against the calculated bowling attack of Kolkata Knight Riders who went on to grab the game.

Rajasthan Royals managed 132 runs for the loss of six wickets in the measured 20 overs and Kolkata Knight Riders hammered 133 with eight wickets in hand and 16 balls to spare.

Yusuf Pathan (Kolkata Knight Riders) was announced ‘Player of the match’ for his absorbing unbeaten innings of 49 off 35 balls.

The 47th match of the Indian Premier League was held on Friday, May 3, 2013, at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.

Earlier, Rahul Dravid won the toss for Rajasthan Royals and sent Shane Watson along with Ajinkya Rahane to open the innings. The latter started with 1 four whereas Watson got 2 fours in the third over and they scored 20 runs in 18 balls. Rahane was gone at 20 in the next over for his personal score of 6 and the newcomer James Faulkner went back seven runs later for just one. Sanju Samson walked in next, tasted his first boundary in the 8th over and added 15 runs with Watson in the following over comprising 1 six and 1 four. Shane Watson was held leg before wicket off Sunil Narine for 35 from even balls with 4 fours as the score touched 71 in 10.5 overs.

The next wicket fell at 83 as Owais Shah joined in with Samson who hit his second six in the 13th over. Shah kept on creeping from the other end as Sanju Samson was caught by Jacques Kallis at long-on at the bowling of Rajat Bhatia for 40 off 36 with 2 big sixes and 1 four. Owais Shah was clean bowled by Kallis for 24 as Rajasthan Royals reached 132 with four wickets intact in 20 overs.

Sachithra Senanayake was the top wicket taker with two whereas Iqbal Abdulla, Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine and Rajat Bhatia shared one wicket each.

The skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir, and Manvinder Bisla started off nicely by scoring 25 runs in the first three overs with 1 six and 2 fours. Bisla got three more boundaries in the coming overs as Gambhir was stumped smartly by Dishant Yagnik off Shane Watson for 12. The first wicket fell at 41 and 14 runs later, Bisla was caught by Rahane off Ankeet Chavan for 29 from 25 with 1 six and 4 fours.

Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan associated in the park , they hit a six each as the boundaries were being witnessed at regular intervals. Pathan was the most aggressive of the two and added 2 more sixes and 1 four in the following overs as the hundred of the innings was displayed on board in the 12th over. The solid partnership for the third wicket remained unbroken as Kallis hit the winning four on the second delivery of the 18th over and the score rushed to 133. Yusuf Pathan stood firm at his end for 49 off just 35 balls with 3 spicy sixes and even fours and Kallis scored 33 from 30 with 1 six and 2 fours.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the game with a substantial margin of eight wickets and earned two points.
