Chennai Super Kings 6-124 (Michael Hussey 40, Ravindra Jadeja 36*, Yusuf Pathan 1-9) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 9-119 (Gautam Gambhir 25, Yusuf Pathan 25, Jadeja 3-20) by four wickets.
Another all round performance by the most dependable player of Chennai Super Kings, Ravindra Jadeja, led his team to a convincing win vs. Kolkata Knight Riders.
Kolkata Knight Riders managed 119 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs and Chennai Super Kings achieved the target by smashing 124 runs with four wickets in hand and five balls to spare.
Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings) was declared ‘Player of the match’ for his sterling all round execution in the game.
The 26th match of the Indian Premier League was played on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
The captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir, won the toss and came into bat along with Yusuf Pathan. Gambhir started off well by scoring nine runs in the first over with a couple of fours and Pathan followed him with the same result in the next over. The brisk run rate was maintained in the coming three overs where the two batsmen added another four boundaries and took the score to 44 after the first five overs. Gautam Gambhir became the first victim at 46 in 5.5 overs after his personal contribution of 25 runs.
Jacques Kallis and Eoin Morgan remained unimpressive, Yusuf Pathan was run out for 25 and was the fourth batsman to be dismissed at 55 in 8 overs. Manoj Tiwary and Debabrata Das shared a fighting partnership of 27 runs before the latter was gone for 19 off 15 balls with 2 sixes. Tiwary scored 13 runs as Kolkata Knight Riders reached 119 runs with one wicket left in 20 overs.
Ravindra Jadeja was the star performer with three wickets, Ravichandran Ashwin held two whereas Chris Morris and Dwayne Bravo claimed one wicket each.
Chennai Super Kings sent in Ravichandran Ashwin surprisingly to open the innings with Michael Hussey. They scored 22 runs in the first four overs as Ashwin went back to the dressing room after scoring 11 runs. Michael Hussey secured his end with authority as the rival bowlers ripped through the strong batting line up of CSK. Murali Vijay, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni and Subramaniam Badrinath scored 2, 7, 9 and 6 runs respectively and they were reeling at 5-71 in 15.3 overs.
Ravindra Jadeja joined in next as Hussey hit the first six of the innings on the fifth delivery of the 16th over. Michael Hussey was caught by Yusuf Pathan at deep square leg off Lakshmipathy Balaji for 40 off 51 balls with 1 six and 2 fours. Jadeja gathered 12 runs in the 17th over with 1 six and 1 four and the target was reduced to 27 from the last 18 deliveries. He added another eight runs in the following over with 1 six but was dropped at 24 by Pathan off Jacques Kallis.
Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo brought their team closer to victory by accumulating 15 runs in the 19th over with the support of 3 fours. Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning six on the first ball of the last over and remained unbeaten for 36 off 14 mere balls with 3 gigantic sixes and even fours. Bravo was at the other end with seven as Chennai Super Kings thrashed 124 after losing six wickets in 19.1 overs.
Lakshmipathy Balaji, Sachithra Senanayake, Sunil Narine, Yusuf Pathan and Jacques Kallis shared one wicket each.
Chennai Super Kings clinched the thrilling encounter by a margin of four wickets and got two valuable points.
