Kolkata Knight Riders 136-4 (Shakib Al Hasan 42, Brendon McCullum 41, Wayne Parnell 2-18) beat Pune Warriors 102-8 (Jesse Ryder 22, Anustup Majumdar 17, Yusuf Pathan 2-12) by 34 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders demonstrated their complete authority vs. Pune Warriors assisted with an all round performance by Shakib Al Hasan in the IPL 2012.

Kolkata Knight Riders scored 136 runs with six wickets in hand in their allocated 20 overs and the innings of Pune Warriors was restricted to 102 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

Shakib Al Hasan (Kolkata Knight Riders) was declared ‘Player of the match’ for his excellent game exhibition both with the bat and ball.

The 70th match of the Indian Premier League was played on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Subrata Roy Stadium, Pune.

Earlier, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Gautam Gambhir won the toss and came into bat with Brendon McCullum. The later started off well with a couple of fours in the first over and crawled to 21 in 4.3 overs when Gambhir lost his wicket for 10 runs. Jacques Kallis dropped in next and they kept the score board moving but the boundaries were hard to earn. Kallis was clean bowled by Michael Clarke for 13 at the total of 40 runs as the all rounder, Shakib Al Hasan joined in with McCullum.

They tried to stabilise the innings with determination as Brendon McCullum opened up in the 12th over with two back to back fours. Shakib dispatched a six on the second ball of the following over but got a life on the fourth ball when dropped by Wayne Parnell at deep square leg off Clarke for 13 runs. They picked up the run rate from the 14th over by scoring 11 runs with a couple of fours as Shakib added two consecutive boundaries in the next over and the first hundred of the innings was achieved.

The duo enhanced the score to 107 runs in 16.1 overs as McCullum was gone for 41 off 43 balls with 5 fours. Shakib Al Hasan became the next victim after the addition of 10 runs and was clean bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 42 from 30 deliveries with the assistance of 2 lofty sixes and 3 fours. Manoj Tiwary and Yusuf Pathan accumulated 21 runs in 2.1 overs as Kolkata Knight Riders got a defendable score of 136 runs at the end of the 20th over.

Wayne Parnell was the main wicket taker with two whereas Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Michael Clarke claimed one wicket each.

Pune Warriors lost their first wicket for 11 runs in 2.2 overs as Clarke associated with Jesse Ryder who added 15 runs in a couple of overs with two sixes. They found it hard to score the boundaries but shared 40 runs partnership for the second wicket when Clarke was smartly stumped by the wicket keeper, Brendon McCullum for 13 runs. The stumps of Jesse Ryder were uprooted by Yusuf Pathan five runs later at his individual feat of 22 off 24 balls with two sixes. The bowlers of Kolkata Knight Riders took over as Anustup Majumdar and Callum Ferguson were able to enter the double figures with 17 and 12 runs respectively.

The next four batsmen found it hard to negotiate with the perfect bowling of the rival team and could not touch the double figures. Pune Warriors managed 102 mere runs with just two wickets left before the required quota of 20 overs was consumed.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the match by 34 runs, grasped two points masterfully at the end and clinched the second position in the table.

Kolkata Knight Riders – 21 from 16 games at a net run rate of +0.561.

Pune Warriors               –  8 from 16 games at a net run rate of -0.551.
